Oh, the pure joy of Babies R Us when you are having your first baby. It is fun! It is exciting! And they have EVERYTHING! All you have to do is spend a couple hours looking at every single thing and you know you are covered!
I’ve been through this drill with two kiddos, and I’m here to tell you that there are two items that you will want to hit the hardware store for. These two items have saved me sleep and time and those are two things you are about to have very little of!
Get more Sleep
If you’ve never done this, let me just say, it is not always easy, once you get a baby to sleep, to KEEP a baby asleep. There are also going to be times when you want to look in on them to make sure everything is okay.
Sound is one thing. You need to be quiet. But light, for my kids light was key. My kids are 5 and 9 and I still have blackout shades on their windows because everyone sleeps better in darkness!
It is just not intuitive to think of it, so I’m just going to tell you, go buy a dimmer switch for the baby’s room! I cannot tell you what a “lightbulb moment” it was for me when I figured that one out! You just can’t turn on the overhead light. Leaving a lamp on is not a great idea, and really, if you have to change a diaper, who wants bright lights to wake everyone up!
The dimmer was a life saver! I used it to check on my kids. I used it when I was feeding them in the middle of the night and when they needed changed. I never turned it up more than the lowest setting. It just kept the whole situation “mellow”.
Dimmers are super simple to install. I did it myself, so ladies don’t be afraid. It is basically turning off your electricity, unscrewing the switch cover, twisting some wires together, and done!
Have more Time
This item come in handy once you are using the bathtub for your kiddos. A few months down the road. But be prepared. Get one of those shower heads with the hose attachment.
Who wants to lay a kid down in the bathtub to rinse the soap off their heads? Ugh! That is the worst! It is when they cry and wiggle around the most! Save your sanity and get one of those hoses.
Bath time is fun for kids, but I don’t always have time for the “play bath.” Most of the time, my kids get a speedy shower. They stand in the tub (make sure to have a shower mat), and I get them wet, soap them down, wash their hair, and rinse. Two minutes and we’re DONE! That has saved so much time.
And the best part, and this is going to happen, is when you are washing a child who just wet their bed. That is the worst kind of sleep interruption! My daughter has long hair, and I will always smell her hair to make sure it didn’t get peed on, and if not, wash her lower body and we are done in 30 seconds!
I promise you this shower head will be something you cannot live without!
Time and sleep are precious, and you need to find creative ways to reserve it and not waste it away on bright lights and long baths! Get on over to the hardware store and get those things installed before the baby comes! Then come back here and thank me in the comments!
Hey “Seasoned Parents”, do you have any non-Babies R Us essentials to recommend new parents buy?
