Leaves are falling and evenings are getting darker. Fall is on its way, mamas! With it comes yummy lattes and… cozy clothes!
Fall fashion is one of my favorites… with the boots, jeans and cardigans. With just a few basics from your summer wardrobe and add-ins specifically for fall/winter, you can shape a mommy wardrobe for fall (and winter) that is both comfortable for the daily grind and reflects your style!
You don’t need to start from scratch when shaping a fall wardrobe. Many of the basics you wore during summer can be transitioned into outfits for fall. By using a few basics as a foundation, you avoid having to purchase very many new pieces. You might only need to add a few warmer items to accessorize your existing summer wardrobe.
Here are 9 summer wardrobe basics most moms already have in their wardrobe and ideas on how they can be combined in new ways for fall weather. If you don’t own something in one of these categories, you can rest assured that buying those items will serve you well throughout the year—in cold and warm weather! It will be a smart buy.
9 Summer Wardrobe Basics that Transition to Fall
1. Maxi Skirts or Dresses
In the summer they are flowy enough to keep you cool by simply pairing them with sandals. In the fall they can be paired with boots (and leggings for an extra layer of warmth) and a denim jacket or vest. This pattern of skirt/dress is extremely versatile and so comfy they could be your pajamas. That’s what I call mom-friendly!
Striped tees currently strike a golden chord when it comes to fashion: they are both a classic (making them timeless) and they are currently trending. You can’t go wrong owning a couple of shirts in these patterns. While you might wear them with shorts in the summer, they can be paired with jeans or a maxi skirt and the addition of a cardigan and scarf in the fall.
Don’t pack away your summer tees just because they are short-sleeved. Paired with a cardigan and scarf or worn under a long-sleeve button-down, these summer wardrobe staples can act as a basic layering piece in many outfits.
Whether you wear belts on your hips or above your waist, these accessories really shout “fall time” when worn over simple dresses, plaid and chambray button-downs and patterned blouses.
While you probably wore them cuffed into capris during most of the summer, you can now let down the cuffs… or not. Before the weather turns very cold and wet, even cuffed boyfriend jeans (pictured in center) combined with canvas sneakers or flats can be just warm enough for fall. Adding a scarf keeps it from looking too summery.
Or unroll that hem for a staple that will create many cute outfits. Pair them with flats or boots. Wear them with blouses, button-downs, or simple tees and a cardigan.
While you may find yourself leaving your sandals on the shelf as we progress through September, those flats you wore all summer are going to continue running the show. Next to sneakers and boots, they can be your shoe of choice for awesome fall outfits that keep your toes warm.
Whether they be sleeveless, short-sleeved or light chiffon material, blouses under denim or utility jackets and paired with scarves can be just as warm in the fall time.
8.Chambray button downs
You may or may not have used one of these during the summer. Regardless, they should definitely get added to your fall time wardrobe. Paired with color pants and flats, leggings and boots, or belted over a dress, these trending tops will keep you looking effortlessly stylish all season long.
Last but not least, vests worn during the summer can stay in your closet. In cooler weather, wear them over long-sleeved tops and dresses. Add a scarf or pendant necklace for an extra feminine touch. One denim vest and one non-denim vest will ensure you have one to go with any bottom you’re wearing.
