Last Thursday night, my 34-week pregnant self had the opportunity to observe “Barre Code”, which is the core class of The Barre Code, a fitness studio in Fishers. I should issue a disclaimer – working out is not my cup of tea, pregnant or not. So, imagine my surprise when I found myself bopping to the music, actually wishing I could participate, rather than sitting on the sidelines drinking my water. Turns out, that feeling is common when you go to The Barre Code.

Owned and operated by Danielle Hacker, herself an expecting mom, The Barre Code is not intimidating, as gyms and workout classes can often be for beginners or those who may be a bit, ahem, out of practice. In fact, it’s the opposite! The studio itself is scattered with motivational quotes, bright workout clothes and accessories, and fun upbeat music. I found myself wanting to hang out and get to know the ladies there, rather than run back to my minivan.

While sitting in the actual class, I was so impressed by all of the participants, sweating and giving it their all at 6:00 on a Thursday night. The music was upbeat and non-stop; the pace of the class was fast. There weren’t really any breaks to be had, but at the same time, the instructor reiterated to the students to go at their own pace, and offered modifications to fit varying levels of fitness. Hacker describes the class as “A full-body workout consisting of isometric holds and heavy repetitions, working muscles to fatigue to develop muscle stamina and endurance.” And she should know; Danielle has spent her whole life surrounded by fitness – her dad was a body builder, and her mom was an avid jazzerciser, jazzing right up until the birth of Danielle and her brother. In fact, both parents teach classes from time to time at The Barre Code.

After class, I spoke with Nicole Lewis, a mom of a SEVEN WEEK OLD from Fishers. Let that sink in; at seven weeks post-partum, my workout was trolling the aisles at Target. Lewis has been a member of The Barre Code for about one and a half years, and took the Barre Code class well into her pregnancy. The class I watched was her first night back after baby, and let me say, girl was killing it! Props to you, Nicole. I also spoke with Kiley Simmons, a mom of a toddler from McCordsville. Simmons enjoys the class so much that she carves out the time to attend 2-3 times a week, and wishes she could do more. When asked “What keeps you coming back?” both women responded immediately. Simmons answered succinctly, “Because it works. I don’t like the gym or running. But this, I like.” She likes it so much she’s worked off three dress sizes through The Barre Code. Lewis said it’s the supportive staff as well as the feeling of being held accountable by classmates and the instructors that got her hooked. I asked Kiley and Nicole if they would recommend the class to someone new and bother answered with an instant “Yes!” Nicole has even gotten her mom to try the class; she pointed out that there are women of all ages, shapes, and sizes there. Not everyone is stick skinny. Kiley especially enjoyed the class as she could stick with it up through the 30th week of her pregnancy, as it is low impact and helps with aches and pains. (Always check with your doctor!)

Barre Code Mantra

After driving home, I told my husband, I think this is something I’ll check out after my baby arrives. (Not seven weeks after he arrives, however. Let’s be serious – I’ll be on the Target workout plan at that point!) I love the idea of taking time for myself, for my health, and doing something for just me.  I think The Barre Code will be just the place to get in gear.
