Everyone loves a holiday or trip to see family and friends. However, I am sure most parents dread trying to keep a toddler entertained on a plane, train, bus or car ride for any length of time. I know I certainly do. Or I used to until I discovered the “Go Bag”.
After another grueling 5-hour car trip to see my husbands’ family, I threw my hands up and declared I wasn’t doing it again. My husband talked sensed into me and I realized that I couldn’t refuse to travel just because my toddler was an active little boy who disliked being confined. We had to come up with something to help keep him occupied and happy in the car, that didn’t involve plying him with food or bribing him with treats!
I spent some time Googling and on Pinterest and found this great idea for a “Go Bag”.
It is such a simple concept I kicked myself for not thinking of it before. It is a bag that you keep in the car with different toys and objects to keep your toddler entertained. I keep mine hanging in front of him so he can reach it and pull out what he wishes to play with.
It is also handy to grab when going out to a restaurant or café. They can sit there and play with the items from their “Go Bag” whilst you relax and enjoy your food (hopefully)!
What is in the “Go Bag”
Anything you want! Your options are only limited by your imagination and the size of the bag.
I bought a cheap calico bag that has long handles so it can hang off the back of the headrest. It is a great idea to have your toddler pick something out. They feel involved and are excited to add things to their bag.
I like to rotate the toys out before a long trip so there are new and exciting things for my toddler to discover. Currently our “Go Bag” has:
- A helicopter
- A motorbike
- 2 matchbox cars
- A dinosaur
- 2 little books.
Everything a little boy needs to keep him entertained whilst on the road!
The best thing is it is easy to change and adapt what goes into the bag for them as they grow older.
So stop dreading those trips, and plan for them! Set up your “Go Bag” for hours of fun and a calmer and happier trip for all your family.
